Now it is the office, having been redeveloped as business space by local firm, Plum Developments, which bought the building in December 2006.
Plum had made its name in redeveloping city centre buildings into contemporary residential accommodation and Alex Cliff, a co-founder, says: "We knew when we bought The Venue that we were buying a famous building, one that people looked back on with excited memories. We wanted to retain the heritage and to create space where commerce can be fun and full of energy.
"This is business space for ambitious companies with growth in mind and it is the calibre of space normally occupied by multi-national banks and financial services firms."
Plum has added a new layer to the building, now called The Venue Studios - a fully-glazed top floor with uninterrupted views across Edinburgh and up to Arthur's Seat. The size of the six floors extends from 1,507 sq ft to 12,646 sq ft and they are quoting rents of over £20 rising to £25.
David Johnston of Cushman & Wakefield, letting agent, says seeing the scheme come to life was a "fascinating" experience
He goes on: "The quality of the space and the views out of the building are what really shine and already we have strong interest from a number of parties - mostly design-led tenants - who also see our clear vision for the property.
"Being next to Waverley Station and only a quick walk from Princes Street and George Street is a huge selling point. In fact, so much so that we nearly named the building Platform 21. In the end we decided to retain The Venue link for many reasons and we feel the new branding works really well.
"It is highly motivating to be involved in such an exciting project and Plum has been fantastic to work for, pushing hard to get key changes to the property through the planning process."
